The fastest way to become a welder and or carpenter?

hands on job training or apprenticeship program? im 17 turn 18 in April graduating year 2013. i really like trades i hear welding is where the money is at.. I don’t know where to start/look i live in Wisconsin and Illinois. can any one help me?
